Paul's Picks from the LCBO New Release of March 31, 2012 - Ready to enjoy Reds and Welcoming Spring with Refreshing White Wines

Hello to all my wine friends,

I feel like I should be thanking the LCBO for this New Release (NR), there are very few high priced temptations to fill my cellar. Actually, I am now in the market for ready to enjoy red wines (more on that later). Looking at this New Release (NR), apart from the wines featured in the following two highlighted segments, here are a few wines I would like to bring to your attention. Starting with two premium full bodied Chardonnay, Amayna Estate Chardonnay 2008 from Chile (076265) at $25.95 and the other from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay 2009 from California (054585) at $37.95. If I bought only one red from this NR, it would be Achaval Ferrer Malbec 2010 from Argentina (024737) at $23.95.  Also worth considering; a good value Shiraz from Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz 2007 from Australia (719575) at $17.95Domaine Grosset Cairanne Côtes du Rhône-Villages 2009 from France (033852) at $17.95. Finally, my pick for the best wine of this release Château Larrivet Haut-Brion 2004 from France (264283) at $48.95. Well let’s get started.

Ready to Enjoy Reds; I have an abundance of wine which needs time in the cellar, allowing them to be enjoyed at there best. What I need right now, are wines that are not to tannic, good value and ready to drink now. As many of you have told me, we are all looking for good value wines (from $15.00 to $20.00) that are easy drinking but still packing lots of flavour with good structure. Here are a few suggestions from this NR;
  • Taurino Riserva Salice Salentino 2008 from Puglia, Italy (177527) at $14.95 - My second pick for best value wine; a value wine should be flawless, well balanced and a delightful drinking experience at a price that allows it to be enjoyed on a regular occasion. Just like this traditional style red blend from the region of Puglia in the south of Italy (along the heel of the boot), a blend of 80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera. My brother says that he can eat spaghetti almost every day of the week, well Robert this is a great value Italian red wine for your spaghetti.

  • La Rosa Tinto 2008 from Douro, Portugal (933101) at $19.95 - There are really good wines being made in Portugal at the moment. If you want to try something different, consider this wine made with traditional Port varieties from the older dry stone terraced vineyards at La Rosa. Maturation took place in Allier French oak casks for 12 months with alcohol coming in at 14.2%

  • Tyrrell’s Rufus Stone Shiraz 2009 from Heathcote, Australia (091488) at $19.95 – Speaking of Port, I know a lot of my friends love this style of deep colour, big, rich almost jammy Shiraz from Australia. Tyrrell’s Rufus Stone Shiraz 2009 is definitely a prime example of this style, but originating from the cooler region of Heathcote, this Shiraz has better acidity, alcohol at 14.5%.

  • Zuccardi Q Malbec 2009 from Mendoza, Argentina (723478) at $19.95 - The always enjoyable series Q from Zuccardi, this wine is 100% Malbec, maturation took place in French medium toasted oak barrels for 12 months plus 6 months in bottle before release. Alcohol at 14.5%

Welcoming Spring with Refreshing White Wines; Now that warmer days are around the corner, are you looking to stock up on refreshing white wines? To be refreshing, a wine should have good acidity and lower alcohol if possible. These four whites are definitely great wines for spring and summer with suggested pairings of; salads, white meat, seafood, vegetable risotto or to enjoy on their own on the patio.
  • Muralhas De Monção Vinho Verde 2010 from Portugal (080374) at $14.95 – I know many people how enjoy Vinho Verde (VV). For those of you who are unfamiliar with (VV); It means green wine in Portuguese, but what it really means is young wine. VV can be either red wine, rosé but mostly a white wine and meant to be consumed within a year of bottling. Vinho Verde are from the region of Minho in the north of Portugal and white VV are usually inexpensive, low alcohol, crisp and slightly spritzy and very refreshing on a hot summer day.

  • Studert-Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2007 from Mosel, Germany (114777) at $17.95 – In my view, there are few wines which such complex aromatics as a German Riesling. This Riesling is from the very good 2007 vintage, the sweetness level is medium, the alcohol at a low of 8.5% and for fans of German Riesling an absolute steel at $17.95.

  • Momo Sauvignon Blanc 2010 from Malborough, New Zealand (009167) at $17.95 – You cannot discuss Sauvignon Blancs (SB), without talking about New Zealand. This wine is made with 100% SB grapes, tropical fruit and citrus flavours, good acidity, dry and refreshing with alcohol at 14.0%. This style of SB is better enjoyed with food like grilled chicken salad or risotto.

  • Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc 2010 from Napa Valley, California (966036) at $27.95 – This wine is also made with 100% SB dry-farmed, organically grown grapes and stainless-steel fermented. This wine has crisp acidity, low alcohol at 12.8% and flavours of green apple and citrus fruit. I see this wine served with grilled white fish, baby potatoes and steamed vegetables.

My top three wines of this release;
1-Château Larrivet Haut-Brion 2004 from France (264283) at $48.95
2-Achaval Ferrer Malbec 2010 from Argentina (024737) at $23.95

On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied (alcohol coming in at 14%), rich, yet well structured with good acidity and firm tannins. Grgich Hills Estate Merlot 2007, Napa Valley, California, USA

From the very good 2007 California vintage, this wine is 100% Merlot, certified organic and biodynamic. Fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in a mixture of large and small French oak barrels with 30% new barrels. This wine opens up with aromas of blueberry, cherry, dark plum, dried violet, cedar and savoury notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied (with alcohol at 14.8%), balance acidity, fine grained tannins with fine texture and harmony. The finish is long smooth and savoury. This is a aromatic, stylish, elegant wine with excellent balance and drinkability. I say it is drinking pretty close to its peak right now. Very enjoyable and strongly recommended, score 93 points.

Truchard Zinfandel 2008, Carneros, Napa Valley, California, USA

Wow, what a beautiful bouquet on this Zin, with aromas of blackberry, plum, wild berries, savoury spices, floral and herbal notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied, with generous alcohol at 15.3%, but well balanced by jammy ripe berries, crisp acidity and smooth tannins. The finish is long, enjoyable, with sweet seductive fruit and savoury flavours. A very elegant, savoury and tasty style of Zinfandel. Strongly recommended, score 90 points.

Blasted Church Merlot 2008, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

The province of British Columbia has many wineries with very original names, with equally unique labels.  Blasted Church and other like Dirty Laundry Vineyards,  Laughing Stock Vineyards and See Ya Later Ranch to name a few. I recommend you visit the Blasted Church winery web site to learn more about the story behind there name.
http://blastedchurch.com/

Their name and labels may be fun, but there wines are very serious, like their Merlot, with aromas of dark cherry, plum, coffee, earthy barnyard saddle leather. On the mouthfeel, full bodied, alcohol coming in at 14.8%, balance acidity and chalky, grainy tannins. Very good length on the finish with a rich combination of fruit, cedar and smoke flavours lingering. What this Merlot lacks in elegance today, is more than made up by sheer power and generous flavours, the elegance will come later as it sheds some of its oak. The excellent 2007 vintage of this Merlot is still available here at the LCBO, but has the usual inflated price of BC wines here in Ontario at $38.95. Score 90 points.

Purchased at the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival March 02, 2012 at $25.99

i Castei Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2006, Veneto Italy

Wow, what an incredable nose on this Amarone. Aromas of dried berries, prune, raisins, fresh dates, soft leather and attractive cedar notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied (with alcohol coming in at 15.5%), luscious fruit flavours, low acidity and velvet tannins. Very good length on the finish with rich, creamy concentrated flavours. The blend on this wine is 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella with the remaining 10% a combination of Molinara and other unspecified grapes. Amarone can some times be a little over the top when it comes to sweetness, for me, this one strikes the right balance between sweetness, tannins, alcohol and enough acidity to make it all very enjoyable. Score 91 points.

Purchased February 5, 2011 LCBO New Release (739979) at $34.95

Domaine Thunevin-Calvet Cuvée Constance 2008, AC Côtes Du Roussillon Villages, France

This wine is a blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Carignane from the very warm Mediterranean coast in South eastern France, aged in concrete and bottled unfined and unfiltered. This Grenache comes through on the nose with aromas of ripe cherry, red plum, raspberry, licorice, minerals and dry herbs. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied, alcohol slightly high at 15%, balance acidity and interesting fine grain tannins. Very good length on the finish, sweet and bitter red fruit and earthy, rustic flavours, with some alcohol heat. An interesting and different wine for  sure, very enjoyable and fairly priced. Score 89 points.

Vega Sauco Adoremus Tinta De Toro 2004, Toro, Spain

Once I started inserting the cork screw, the top of the cork started to split away, with pieces breaking away. When the cork screw reached halfway, I knew I had penetrated a much softer part of the cork. With my best efforts to remove the cork, pulling as lightly as possible, it broke in half, with the bottom falling in the bottle. It made me wonder how long the bottle had been standing up, for the cork to dry this much. What you see inserted into the neck of the bottle is a product from Denmark called Nuance.

It acts as an aerator, wine filter and the pour is beautiful. I sold many of these when I worked in a wine shop. I love this product. It comes in handy in a situation like this. But what is important, is the wine right?

This wine aromatics are truly captivating, Tempranillo through and through with aromas of cherry,  wild strawberry, leather, church wood, sweet spices and tobacco leaf. On the palate, medium-full bodied, soft creamy texture, balance acidity and silky tannins. The finish is long, savoury and very enjoyable. On a more technical note, this wine is 100% Tinta De Toro, the local name for Tempranillo, aging took place in 50% French and 50% in American oak for 18 months, than 1 year in bottle before release.  Apart from the cork situation, an awesome wine and excellent value for money. Score 90 points.

Paul's Picks from the LCBO New Release of March 17, 2012 - Intro to Spanish Wine and Interesting off the Beaten Track Choices

Hello to all my wine friends,

 I am back from Vancouver on such a high from all the great wines tasted at the Vancouver International Playhouse Wine Festival 2012. You can read all about it on my blog. It’s a shame my disposable income is not on par with the price of all these great wines. Looking at this New Release (NR), apart from the wines featured in the following two highlighted segments, here are a few wines I would like to bring to your attention. Starting with white wines, three great value Chardonnay from Burgundy in France; Domaine Christophe Camu Chablis 2009 (268532) at $18.95 (Unoaked), Domaine Rodet Château de Mercey Mercurey 2009 (265058) at $22.95 and Sylvaine & Alain Normand Macon La Roche-Vineuse 2010 (268946) at $17.95. Now for the red wines; Valle Reale Montepulciano D’Abbruzzo 2007 from Italy (216408) at $17.95 at this price is worth stocking up, Truchard Zinfandel 2008 from California (054858) at $25.95, an ultimate BBQ wine and finally two expensive, premium “trophy” wines; Concha Y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 from Chile (315176) at $79.95, I enjoyed their new 2008 vintage at the Vancouver wine show two weeks ago, and finally Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2009 from France (711317) at $89.95 I tasted this wine in Vancouver as well and this is a stunner, worth every penny. Well lets get started with this NR.

Intro to Spanish Wine;   In the conclusion of my last newsletter, I had mentioned that I couldn’t wait to review the next NR with a promised feature section called “Signature Spanish Flavours”. It was renamed the “Flavour Fiesta Spanish Wines”, nothing to throw a party or light up fireworks, for sure. I always like Spanish wines, even more since I attended last year Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival were Spain was the theme country. This country produces so many great wines in the $20.00 to $40.00 range, but few find there way to the LCBO. If you enjoy Spanish wines the SAQ have a much better and more interesting selection. Here is my Spanish wines wish list for the LCBO; Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses 2008, Muga Especial Reserva 2005, Telmo Rodriguez wines like Lanzaga Rioja and M2 De Matallana, Marqués De Riscal Gran Reserva 2003 to name a few. Here are the only three Spanish wines which caught my attention in this NR;

  • Bodega Del Abad Dom Bueno Crianza 2001 (244699) at $14.95 – By Spanish labelling laws, Crianza must be aged for 2 years with at least 6 months in oak. This wine is made with 100% Mencia grape and ready to drink, but don’t expect a fruit bomb, this is a soft and mature wine.

  • Vega Sauco Adoremus Tinta De Toro 2004 (268813) at $19.95 – This wine is new to me and one that I am the most exited to try in this NR. This wine is 100% Tinta de Toro, the local name for Tempranillo, aging took place in 50% French and 50% American oak for 18 months, than 1 year in the bottle before release. I am thinking BBQ lamb chops with mint sauce for me.

  • Baron De Ley Gran Reserva 2001 from Rioja (642496) at $29.95 – By Spanish labelling laws, Gran Reserva (GR) must have a minimum aging of 5 years, at least 18 months in oak and a minimum of 3 years in bottle. In general GR wines are aromatic, elegant, smooth and spicy. I like to serve them with slightly spicy food like Indian, authentic Chinese food (not sweet) Vietnamese or Thai. This wine was available at the SAQ last fall and since I like Spanish wines and wines by Baron De Ley, knowing that it would be released in Ontario at some point, I did purchase a few bottles. Baron De Ley Gran Reserva 2001 is an excellent example of the style and you can read my review of this wine here;
http://paulnjoywine.blogspot.com/2011/11/baron-de-ley-grand-reserva-2001-rioja.html
Interesting off the Beaten Track Choices;  Time to veer off course, and to try something different. Here is my selection of either unusual grape varietals, blends or favourite grapes from lesser know region which are worth a serious considerations;

  • Luigi Bosca De Sangre Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot / Syrah 2008 from Argentina (261933) at $21.95 – We are all familiar with Luigi Bosca Malbec by now, from the Maipu region of Mendoza in Argentina, this wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon at 70% with Merlot and Syrah with each 15% in a supporting role. The wine requires protein, perfect with the BBQ session coming up.

  • Campbells Shiraz / Durif 2010 from Australia (271569) at $19.95 – From Campbells family owned vineyard in a cooler climate (aka better acidity) of Victoria region, this wine is a blend of Shiraz at 90% with 10% Dirif (Aussie name for Petit Sirah). To enjoy now with BBQ hamburgers, pizza,cellar 3-4 years.

  • Spice Route Shiraz 2009 from South Africa (263657) at $24.95 – From the lesser known, very hot and dry region of Swartland in South Africa, this Shiraz from old bush vines is aged in French and American oak for 18 months. Cellar this full bodied Shiraz until the summer and serve with BBQ steaks or lamb.

  • Burgerspital Trocken Silvaner 2010 from Germany (260273) at $16.95 – We all know of my love for Germain Riesling, how about white grape Silvaner from the Franken region of Germany. Very consistent with each vintage, expect a aromatic, crisp wine with citrus and tree fruit flavours. The bottle alone (squat bottle) makes for an interesting conversation piece. I would pair this with white fish or a vegetarian dish.

  • Quinta Nova Pomares 2009 from Portugal (214007) at $16.95 – Earlier I was saying that I was excited to try a new wine. Now this wine, I had great joy with there 2008 vintage of this wine reviewed on my blog March 23, 2011. Quinta Nova Pomares 2009 is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinto Roriz (traditional Port grapes), with part of the blend stored in French and American oak barrels for 6 months. I would serve this wine with foods rich in flavour like Indian, Moroccan or Vietnamese.

Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo 2007, IGT Toscany, Italy

There is a more modern feel and texture to this Super Tuscan but still truly Italian. On the nose the Sangiovese is coming through with aromas of dried cherry, dark plum, blackberry, soft leather, spice box and earthy notes. On the mouthfeel, full bodied with alcohol coming in at 14.5% , balanced acidity, dusty tannins with good balance between ripe fruit and oak derived characteristics. Clean finish with excellent depth of flavours and a mild tannin finish. This wine is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 10% each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with ageing of 14 months in French oak, 50% new oak and 50% in one year old barrels. A very good value red blend here, and strongly deserving of its number 30 on Wine Spectator top 100 of 2009. Score 91 points.

Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival, February 27 - March 4, 2012

The Vancouver Playhouse Wine Festival was a great opportunity to explore my thirst for knowledge of the global wine industry. With 180 producers and 791 wines, one really needs a plan of action that maps out the wineries or country to visit. Needless to say, I never seem to get around to visiting all the wineries on my list, and this year I even managed to forget one of my favourite wines, Rieslings from Germany, frustrating to be sure. Apart from Chablis and a few Chardonnays, I focused on tasting red wines, about 70 in total, in 5 hours spread over two days. This years Festival regional theme, were the wines of Chile, with 35 wineries represented, I dedicated an hour of intensive tasting of wines from British Columbia, Canada. I also visited the wines of Argentina, Australia, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and wines from California. I decided not to visit the wines of New Zealand since they will be visiting my hometown of Ottawa, May 8, 2012.

Wines of Chile; This festival was a great opportunity the taste some of Chile's premium wines. Most people know Chile as a good producer of value priced wines in the $10 to $15 range, dating back to the 1980s. Now those early generations have moved on to more balanced and complex wines. If Chile wants to kept that share of the market, the Chilean wineries have to adapt, which means moving up in the mountains where cooler climate will give the wines better acidity, lower yields for better concentration and good use of blending. Of course, this means extra investment and cost, but consumers don’t mind paying more for such premium wines. I listened as many wineries spoke of how they have embraced organic and biodynamic practices and efforts made to minimize their carbon foot print. As a country, Chile is leading the way in sustainable wine production, they should be very proud. Here are some of my favourite wines from Chile tasted at this show;

  • Concha Y Toro Don Melchor 2008 from Maipo Valley – This iconic Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile is rich yet well structure, well balance with lots of everything but no excess.
  • Cousino-Macul Lota 2007, Maipo Valley – This wine is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, with an awesome nose, great concentration of fruit with lots of energy and length.
  • Errazuriz Kai Carmenère 2009, Aconcagua Valley – Surprisingly few Carmenère at this show, but this one was my favourite by far. This wine is very elegant, finely textured, fruit driven and fragrant.
  • Miguel Torres Cordillera Syrah 2008, Curico Valley – This Syrah offers great aromatics, fine texture and harmony on the palate with a smooth, elegant and savoury finish.
  • Santa Rita Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Maipo Valley – A more sophisticated, elegant style of Cabernet Sauvignon with seamless aromatics, soft seductive fruit and well integrated oak. A bit expensive at $80.00, but this wine is so smooth.

Red Wines of British Columbia; I lived for approx 3 ½ years in BC and very much enjoyed their wines. This event gave me the opportunity to taste their newer vintages and new blends, here are my highlights;
  • Merlot; If you have been following my blog for a while, you have probably noticed that I enjoy drinking Merlot. I believe that BC has a great climate, and produces world class Merlot. Here are 3 of my favourite; Blasted Church Merlot 2008 and Hester Creek Reserve Merlot 2008, beautiful wines, soft texture, plumy and ripe berry fruit. Sandhill Small Lots Single Block Merlot 2009 a little darker in colour with more complexity and structure.

JOHN SIMES, WINEMAKER
MISSION HILL FAMILY ESTATE
Syrah; I think there is a lot of potential with this varietal in BC, personal opinion here, French oak is best with BC Syrah/Shiraz. Here are two of them which got my attention; Mission Hill SLC Syrah 2009 and Painted Rock Syrah 2009 both of them highly aromatic, with good varietal character, concentration, great savoury aromas and polished tannins. Speaking of Mission Hill, for those who have purchased Oculus 2007, I had the opportunity to re-taste it at this show. You will be glad to know that within a year or two, you will be holding a spectacular wine, your patience will be rewarded. I had purchased two of these last year and it is always nice to be reminded of the possibilities that lay ahead.

    Red Blend; Talking about Syrah, here is a first vintage and a great addition of this new wine from Burrowing Owl, Athene 2009 a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah. A full bodied wine but smooth and rich, would be superb paired with a juicy BBQ steak. Unfortunately for me, this wine was all sold out at the festival wine shop by the time I by the time I stopped tasting and started buying. Next up was a first time wine for me, but on its second vintage, Hester Creek The Judge 2008, a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. And the verdict! This wine is guilty of being dam delicious. What do I like about it? Well the aromatics are awesome, mouthfeel is really pleasant and this blend is drinking well right now, strongly recommended. Another wine from Painted Rock blows me away, there Red Icon 2009. A full bodied blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and 1% Syrah, with aromas of dark fruit, smoky and dark chocolate. Another full-bodied and well crafted Bordeaux blend which never seems to disappoint is Poplar Grove The Legacy 2007 and finally a more elegant and savoury style of Bordeaux blend, Road 13 Fifth Element 2009, a wine I really enjoy.

    And finally, a few observations about wines which either excited me or were a disappointment. Many wines around or above $100.00 fail to impress me, like Vina Arboleda Sena 2008, Lapostolle Clos Apalta 2008 and especially Antinori Solaia 2008. But talking about Antinori, of all the wine tasted, two wines stood out for me; Antinori Guado Al Tasso Bolgueri Superior 2008 from Italy and from Symington Family Estates, Prats & Symington Chryseia 2008 from Portugal, these two wines where my favourite by far. Also worth noting the excellent Damilano Barolo Brunate Cannubi 2006, the very fresh and great value Chardonnay from Domaine Larouche Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons 2007 from France and finally during a show like this, there is always a buzz and recommendations of wines you just have to try... and one of those wine was Muga Reserva Seleccion Especial Rioja 2005, Rioja, Spain. This wasn’t a surprise to me, as I had already reviewed this wine on my blog here is the link;

    Misiones De Rengo Gran Reserva Carmenère 2010, Rapel Valley, Chile

    Certainly an interesting wine here with a blend of Carmenère at 89%, Cabernet Sauvignon 7% and Syrah 4%, with aging taking place in first and second use French and American oak barrels for 12 months. This wine opens up with aromas of blackberry, cherry, cocoa, dried herbs and pencil shaving.  The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, balanced acidity but rustic and woody tannins. Decent weight and length on the finish with rustic and earthy flavours lingering. This wine lacks finesse, however, I think it should improve with some time in your cellar. An interesting and different selection for people who enjoy their wine straightforward and a bit rustic. Score 87 points.

    Purchased on March 3, 2012 LCBO New Release (264937) at $19.95

    Howard Park Scotsdale Shiraz 2008, Western Australia, Australia

    This gorgeous single vineyard 100% Shiraz was aged in French oak barriques for 18 months. This wine opens up with aromas of plummy-blackberry fruit, dried herbs, spicy and sweet vanilla notes. On the palate, a medium-full bodied with alcohol coming in at 14%, rich and concentrated flavours, silky tannins and fresh acidity giving the mouthfeel a nice lift. The finish is long with ripe fruit and savoury flavours lingering. A Shiraz with great aromatics, very elegant, well balanced and very enjoyable. Strongly recommended, score 93 points.

    Purchased through the LCBO Australia First Family of Wine event at $37.00

    Paul's Picks from the LCBO New Release of March 3, 2012 - French Classics Grapes and Chile's Carmenère

    Hello to all my wine friends,

    I am sending you this newsletter from Vancouver while taking part in the Vancouver Playhouse Wine Festival 2012, where the featured wine country is Chile. I will be updating my blog with a feature article, complete with photos, list of favourite wines tasted and purchased while at the show. Looking at this New Release (NR), apart from the wines featured in the following two highlighted segments, here are a few wines I would like to bring to your attention. Looking for great value white wines? Two you may consider are; from the northern region of Veneto in Italy Zenato Lugana San Benedetto 2010 (707158) at $13.95 made with Italian grape Trebbiano; and from Argentina, Arboleda Chardonnay 2010 (606772) at $15.95. For the reds, a very good value Casa Emma Chianti Classico 2009 from Italy (056952) at $18.95, two full bodied Shiraz, one from British Columbia Jackson-Triggs Gold Series Sunrock Vineyard Shiraz 2008 (271031) at $26.95 and the other from Australia Reynella Basket Pressed Shiraz 2008 (510628) $34.95. Finally one of my favourite wine for the past several years, Ridge Three Valleys 2009 from California (652875) at $34.95, a blend of mostly Zinfandel at 70%, blended with these four other grapes, Carignane, Petit Shirah, Grenache and Mataro. Well lets get started.

    French Classic Grapes; The main feature of this NR, is a selection from 14 classic grapes made famous from a country rich in wine history, France. A total of 15 wines will be released this weekend, I would like to highlight these five grape varietals; Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, Carignan and Merlot.

    * La Chablisienne Montmains Chablis 1er Cru 2009 from Burgundy (265090) at $24.95 - In the appellation of Chablis, Chardonnay is the only grape grown. Chardonnays made in this region are very crisp (cool climate region), with strong minerality and little to no oak influence. This wine is made by La Chablisienne which is a cooperative, at $24.95 for a 1er Cru a very good value.

    * Pascal Jolivet Sancerre 2010 from the Loire Valley (264945) at $24.95 - Before New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (SB) became all the rage, the region of Bordeaux and la Loire have been making SB since the middle ages. Of these two French region, for SB I prefer la Loire. Those wines are more refreshing with better acidity. When you see Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre on the label, these are two French appellation situated across from each other and produce Sauvignon Blanc.

    * Domaine Thunevin-Calvet Cuvée Constance 2008 from the South of France (168690) at $18.95 - This wine is a blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Carignane from the very warm Mediterranean coast in Southeastern France, a region blessed with consistent excellent vintage. Not as well known, Carignane makes some very nice wines here in the South of France, Chile and California.

    * Château la Fleur D'Arthur 2008 from St-Émillion in Bordeaux (251702) at $37.95 - The wines of St-Émilion are less tannic and generally more fruit driven than those of the Left Bank. Vines have been cultivated here since the Roman times and Merlot is the Emperor here. The style from St-Émilion is generally soft, rich, savoury character, generous fruit profile and tend to be early maturing. Château la Fleur D'Arthur 2008 is made with Merlot and would benefit from 2-3 years in your cellar.

    Chile's Carmenère; No grape varietal says Chile like Carmenère. A formerly obscure red grape from Bordeaux, the Carmenère has proven to be very successful in Chile. An accidental success story occurred in early 1990s when winemakers discovered that many of the Chilean vines they called Merlots were actually Carmenère. Characteristics of this grape are; low tannins and big, bright blackberry fruit, to drink on its own or paired with red meat. Here my top three Carmenère from this NR;

    * Montes Purple Angel 2009 from Colchagua Valley (062364) at $56.95 - The bench mark for super premium Carmenère, which includes 8% Petit Verdot. A definite candidate for your cellar, between 2-4 years for maximum pleasure.

    * Choncha Y Toro Terrunyo Block 27 Carmenère 2008 from Cachapoal Valley (562892) at $29.95. I had the opportunity to sample this wine at the Vancouver Wine Show today, mostly Carmenère with 85% with the remaining 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Big, bold wine with aromas of ripe berry fruit, black cherry, cassis, spices, cedar and tobacco notes. On the mouthfeel, very dry, concentrated flavours, balance acidity and chalky tannins. The finish is long, dark fruit and cedar notes lingering with hard tannins. The bad news, this wine is not ready for prime time yet, 2-3 years in your cellar will do the job. The good news, the price in Ontario his $5.00 cheeper than the BC price. Lots of potential.

    * Misiones De Rengo Gran Reserva Cuvée Carmenère 2010 from Rapel Valley (264937) at $19.95 - Mostly Carmenère at 89% with Cabernet Sauvignon at 7% and Syrah at 4% adding to the complexity of this wine. To be enjoyed with beef, lamb and strong cheese.

    My top three wines of this release;
    1-Montes Purple Angel 2009 from Chile (062364) at $56.95 Cellar Candidate
    2-Reynella Basket Pressed Shiraz 2009 from Australia (510628) at $34.95
    3-Ridge Three Valleys 2009 from California (652875) at $34.95

    1-Arboleda Chardonnay 2010 from Argentina (606772) at $15.95

    6-Zenato Lugana San Benedetto 2010 from Italy (707158) at $13.95

    That is it for me and my team, I need to return to the tasting tables and enjoy some fine wine here at the Vancouver Playhouse Wine Festival... hard work in deed. I will be back for next New Release of March 17, 2012 where one of the features is a Signature Spanish Flavours, can't wait.

    My top three enjoyed wines for February 2012

    Again, narrowing down the top favourites turned out to be very difficult. I couldn't finish this post without giving a special mention to these three wines which were very enjoyable and I would strongly recommend; Maycas Del Limari Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 from Chile, Muga Reserva Seleccion Rioja 2005 from Spain and Duckhorn Merlot 2009 from Napa Valley, California.

    My top three enjoyed wines in February;

    1-Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz 2006, Clare Valley, Australia

    I just love this wine, it seems that vintage after vintage, it consistently delivers the goods. Without any doubt a top quality grape in this bottle and excellent wine making at play here.

    2-Marchesi De’ Frescobaldi Tenuta Di Castiglioni 2007, Tuscany, Italy

    This is where a very good vintage and a little time in your cellar pays big dividends. Awesome nose, loads of energy and flavours, which turn out to be a fantastic value.

    3-Muratie Shiraz 2007, Stellenbosch, South Africa

    I love a new discovery, talk about a very elegant Shiraz, finely textured with exquisite balance. Worth every penny, returned to purchase two more.
